The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development, was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 and provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. There are 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries, developed and developing to act in a global partnership. They realise that ending poverty and other deprivations must
go together with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and
forests.

The Department for Education (DfE) strategy states that: ‘By 2025,
all education settings will have nominated a sustainability lead and put in place a climate action plan’. The 4 key pillars that represent aspects of addressing climate change to foster a
sustainable future are:
- Decarbonisation
- Biodiversity
- Climate education and green careers goals
- Resilience and adaptation
We are taking our part in
becoming a sustainable setting seriously and as such have an action plan that is helping us to achieve this.
These are some of the
ways that we are working towards being a sustainable early years setting:
- Recycling bins are in
place
- Our building uses energy saving lighting,
frost protection thermostat
- We use sustainably sourced resources
wherever possible.
- Our curriculum supports sustainable
practices through activities to teach children the importance of looking after our planet, community support through litter picking, re-cycling materials used in creative activities, care for our
environment; plants and animals.
- Our Travel Plan supports sustainable ways
to travel to pre-school.
- We utilise the Primary School Forest School
area.
- We require staff and children to use drinks
containers rather than one time only packaging.
- We bulk buy some items to help reduce
packaging.
- We support children’s understanding of the
eco system through our Bug Hotel.
- We have a thick cover on the door leading
to the garden to help reduce heat loss in the cooler months.
- Trips to local farms to learn about caring
for animals and growing crops.
- Our lending library covers a wide range of
resources.
- We use our App, website, email and Facebook
wherever possible to reduce excessive use of paper.
